Instrumental Music Course Offerings
It is our goal at Cabin John to develop
our musicians creative potential through music, along with a greater
understanding and appreciation of music. We provide a variety of
musical experiences and encourage all students to participate. We
encourage artistic performances at the different skill levels, beginning
through advanced. Our goals are realized through strong team work in
class, and through developing a good work ethic at home.

 Beginning
Strings/Winds
- Open to students in grades 6 and 7. Students learn how to play a
band or string instrument with no or very limited experience. Students
who tried it in elementary school, but discontinued, often find it
easier to participate in middle school --the daily practice makes a big
difference.

Intermediate
Orchestra - Open to students in
grades 6 and 7. Students with one or two years of experience will
enjoy this opportunity to play in a large string program at Cabin John. Students
with strong experience on one instrument can explore a secondary, perform
chamber music, or even learn to conduct the orchestra. Students will explore and
perform many different types of music throughout the year. Audition skills and
sight-reading will also be discussed. Qualified students are eligible for
participation in the Montgomery County Honors Orchestra.

General
Band 6 - General Band6 accepts
students of many levels and carefully introduces the middle school
skills. Only one year of experience is necessary. Many students may
consider learning a new "middle school" type instrument which is not
offered to elementary students. Other students can continue to enjoy the
instrument they played in 4th or 5th grade.
Qualified students are eligible for the Montgomery County Honors Band. |

Advanced
Orchestra - Open to 7th and 8th grade
students.. This is the premier string orchestra at Cabin John. Students with
private lesson experience will see many other students with the same musical
background. Students with less experience may request an audition by calling
Cabin John. Many of our members qualify each year for participation in the
Montgomery County Honors Orchestra, Maryland All-State Orchestra, and the
Montgomery County Youth Orchestra. |

Intermediate
Band - This band is open to 7th
or 8th grade students with previous music experience. If you played in
elementary school but did not play in 6th grade, this is a great way to
get back into it. Students with previous music experience may try a new
instrument in this class. Many instruments are available for free-loan.
This group works at a comfortable pace allowing students with less
experience to enjoy learning band music. |

Advanced
Band - Open to 7th, 8th grade. Advanced
Band is the premier Cabin John Band. This group performs widely during the year,
including a performance at the Montgomery County Band Festival. Many of our
members qualify each year for participation in the Montgomery County Honors
Band, Maryland All-State Band, and the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra. |
